More DPS schools seek innovation status

June 22nd, 2011

Denver Public Schools board members heard proposals Thursday night from six more schools seeking innovation status. If approved, theyll bring to 19 the number of district schools with that classification.

DPS board members will vote on the new applications at their June 30 meeting; those that are approved then go to the State Board of Education for a final vote.

Three of the new applicants, McGlone and Green Valley Ranch elementaries and Vista Academy, are in the district’s Far Northeast. And two applicants Godsman Elementary and Summit Academy would be the first innovation schools approved in the district’s Southwest.

WA East-West All-Star H.S. Football Rosters

June 21st, 2011

Since the inception of this blog, High School Cover 2 has covered the 3A/4A, East-West All-Star game held each summer Weve given you practice reports, coach and player interviews and game summaries as well as a feeling for the atmosphere The game was easy for us to cover because, for the last several years, the game was played on the west side of the state at Memorial Stadium in Everett, an easy commute for both of us There is, as football fans know, a second All-Star game for players from smaller schools, 2A and lower, but it was always played on the east side at the same time as the 3A-4A game making it impossible for us to report on This year things are different The 3A/4A game is being played in Cheney, at Eastern Washington University, on the evening of July 1 The 2A and lower game will be, as it has been for a while, in Yakima on June 25 This has presented us with both an opportunity and a small dilemma; should we continue to cover only the 3A/4A game or maybe this is the year that we tell you a little more about the other All-Star game Finally, is there any way that we could report on both games?

Charters draw mixed reviews

June 21st, 2011

Karen Gipson will graduate from the Life Skills Center of Summit County later this month at a ceremony where she’ll be the featured speaker.

”I’m happy that I’m graduating — it took me a while,” said the 22-year-old Barberton High School dropout.

She’s quick to credit the turnaround to Life Skills — a publicly funded, privately operated charter school. ”Honestly, I think Life Skills is better than a regular school.”

The problem is that she’ll walk the stage with so few others.

Last year, Life Skills Center of Summit County posted a graduation rate of 9 percent.

In contrast, Barberton High had a graduation rate of nearly 89 percent.

Akron’s East High School had a 74 percent graduation rate — the lowest of any traditional high school in the city, where most of the Life Skills students live.

State officials say such comparisons are unfair, because most Life Skills students have dropped out of a traditional school. But A

School bus rear-ended, two hurt

June 21st, 2011

Two New Haven school students were taken to the hospital after a school bus was rear-ended Friday morning.

The rain was coming down and the bus full of kids stopped at Lamberton and Ella Grasso Boulevard. The bus was waiting to turn but police say a car was following too closely.

“We stopped at the stop sign and a car bashed into us and everybody was sitting in the back, so we all like went forward and hit the seats and all that,” Ulysses Torres of New Haven said.

It happened around 8:00 a.m. The kids, who were on their way to the Celentano School in New Haven, were tossed around the back.

“My legs kind of hurt because I was all the way in the back and it hit so I kind of went back a little,” Joriel Rodriguez of New Haven said.

The hood of the car was dented in. The bus was not damaged at all. But two kids were hurt including Joriel Rodriguez’ little sister.

“She was, a little, not, not that much,” Rodriguez said.

Two students were taken to the hospital just to be safe.

UC Davis honor student facing deportation gets reprieve

June 20th, 2011

Mandeep Chahal, a pre-med honor student at UC Davis, and her mother facing deportation to India have been given a reprieve, their lawyer said today. Both were scheduled to be deported to India at 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Mandeep’s attorney, Kalpana Peddibhotla, said they were granted a stay of deportation by the Department of Homeland Security. “Mandeep and her mother have been released, though their situation has not been fully resolved,” Peddibhotla said in a statement. “I am in communication with the DHS and am hopeful that we will have a definitive resolution to their case soon. I and the family wish to thank the thousands of supporters from around the country who have advocated on their behalf without which I am fairly certain that Mandeep and her mother would have been deported.

A national campaign with over 3,000 signatures has asked the Obama administration to use its legal discretion to stop the deportation of the undocumented young woman who came to the United States at age 6 and was voted “Most Likely to Save The World” at Los Altos High School in Los Altos.
