College in 3 Years

July 2nd, 2011

Some colleges have recently been putting together programs that allow students to graduate from college in 3 years rather than 4 years.

The first time I read about these types of programs I burst out laughing. Why?

According to the US Department of Education just over 50% of students who enter a 4 year college graduate in 6 years. Thats right. Half of students dont graduate after 6 years. And colleges are concerned about allowing students to graduate in 3 years?

I have to wonder why colleges think that students will be able to graduate in 3 years when they cant get half of their students to graduate in 6 years. Will some students get through in 3 years? Sure. But I am much more concerned about the 50% of students who dont graduate after 6 years. Why dont these colleges focus on getting those students graduated?

Early Acceptance Medical Programs vs Early Assurance Programs

July 2nd, 2011

I have had several recent conversations with students about the difference between early acceptance medical programs and early assurance programs.

Part of the problem is that there is no consistent terminology used with these programs. In general terms, however, early acceptance medical programs are what I refer to as BS/MD programs. These are the programs where high school students apply to college and medical school at the same time.

Early assurance medical programs, on the other hand, are those programs where college students, typically during the sophomore year, apply for admission to medical school.

Early assurance programs are generally not much different than applying to medical school through the traditional approach. These programs typically take the full 8 years to complete and virtually all require that students take the MCAT. Moreover, students dont get the advanced contact with the medical school that BS/MD candidates do.

Early assurance programs arent bad.

How I Can, and Cannot, Help My Readers

June 28th, 2011

I can help provide lots of free general advice regarding the college search process and finding the best college for you.

I can help you with your particular needs if you would like to work with me.

I cannot help find the right school for you or help you find an essay topic for an essay unless you hire me. I gladly give away free advice on this website and in the free 1/2 hour consultations I offer.  But, unfortunately, I dont have the time to help everyone for free.

Moreover, the process of finding the right college or the right essay topic is not a simple one. Without really getting to know you I can not answer specific questions about what is the right choice for you.

I volunteer a significant amount of my time each year working with the local high school in the town where I live. I dont charge anyone from that district to work with me.

Have a general question about the college admissions process? Let me know and I will help answer the question if I have time. I really do want to help.

Accelerated Medical Programs

June 26th, 2011

When I first talk with a parent or student they often say that they want to attend an  accelerated medical programs. But is this really what they want?

Technically, accelerated medical programs are BS/MD programs that last less than 8 years. However, half of BS/MD programs actually last a full 8 years so they are not accelerated.

Practically, a student interested in BS/MD programs should not have a primary focus on finding a shortened program. BS/MD programs are so competitive that a focus on accelerated programs reduced the number of options that a student has. And these are not programs that you want to limit your options on more than necessary.

Approximately half of BS/MD programs last 7 years, while only 4 can be completed in 6 years. Every BS/MD program requires 4 years of medical school. Those that are accelerated reduce the length of time as an undergraduate.

The accelerated programs sometimes take longer than the stated 6 or 7 years.  The intensity of training with an accelerated program often overwhelms a student which requires a students to back off and take longer to complete. F

University of Texas Plans A BS/MD Type Medical Program

June 23rd, 2011

The University of Texas at Austin, the flagship Texas campus, has announced that they will be starting a type of BS/MD program for freshman entering the school in 2013.  This same plan is going into effect at 5 sister campuses.

The program will start 60 freshman in the program with guaranteed admission to the medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas or the UT Health Science Center at Houston.  Another 60 freshman will be added in the spring in a type of early assurance program. Continuation in the program is of course dependent on maintaining good grades although the college has not indicated exactly what that means. For most other BS/MD programs, grades are required to be about a 3.5 GPA.

The plan with these programs is to cut a year off the undergraduate program to make a 7 year medical program. T
