Calif. high schools will have new standards for metal bats

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The aluminum bats used by California’s high school baseball teams will have to meet new safety standards starting in January.

The changes announced Wednesday came after a 16-year-old pitcher from Marin County suffered a major head injury when he was hit in the head last March by a line drive off a metal bat.

Democratic Assemblyman Jared Huffman says he will withdraw his proposed two-year moratorium on non-wooden bats for high school baseball teams.

His bill, AB7, sought to ban both aluminum and composite bats until new safety standards were adopted.

The group that governs high school baseball says the composite bats that some high school teams use will also have to meet new national standards that were announced in July.

The school year is over but high school athletes continue to impress.

Led by Marvin Muschette’s gold-medal win in the triple jump, it was great to see the success enjoyed by local athletes at the Canadian junior track and field championships in Moncton.

It was also nice to track down Marvin and recognize his efforts in The  Record this week.

Which brings me to the point. Feel free to let me know throughout the course of the summer months about the accomplishments of local athletes. I can’t guarantee it will lead to a feature story, but it just might.

Contact me at mbryson@therecord.com to suggest story ideas and keep me up to date.

In the meantime, have a great summer and see you In September.
