Getting Off The Waiting List

August 27th, 2011

Finding out youre on the waiting list has always had that in limbo feel. Are you in? Out? Here are steps to take some control of the situation: Proactive is the word of the day when it comes to getting off the wait list and into the school of choice, according to usnews.com.

These are some of the steps it recommends:

* Let em know: Send a letter to the school informing them that theyre youre first choice. Better yet pay them another visit.

* Refresh your grades: A new transcript can highlight new achievements, so send them along.

* Connect with the local recruiter: Its important the recruiter knows how strong your interest in attending the school is and that youll accept right away.

* Tell them what you can afford: Financial aid decisions play a big part of determining whos in and whos out. Make sure the school knows.

Pacific Graduates among Highest Paid in California

August 27th, 2011

University of the Pacific graduates are among the highest paid college graduates in California, according to a new survey released by PayScale.com this week.

In its 2011 College Salary Report, the website lists Pacific as no. 5 among the “10 Best Schools in California by Salary Potential.” The starting median salary for Pacific graduates is $50,100 and the mid-career median salary for former Pacific students is $103,000. The salaries included bonuses and overtime pay, but did not include stock options or the cost of benefits.

The website based its rankings off of students who earned only bachelor degrees from California colleges and universities. The survey did not include salaries of health or law professionals which eliminated graduates from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences or the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, as those fields typically earn much higher wages than other professions.

The typical starting graduates in the survey had two years of working experience and the mid-career graduates had 15 years of professional experience.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) ranked no.

A New Way to Fill in the Blank

August 26th, 2011

Upon my return to the U.S. from abroad, going through passport control provided a brief moment of reality. I stared blankly at the line on the customs form that read “occupation” and finally penciled in “student.”  However, the truth was that although I had left still in the middle of graduation hype, feeling very much like a “student,” I was returning home feeling more and more “unemployed.”

I didn’t have much time to reflect on my new status, as only a few days later, I found myself making the drive from Chicago to Madison, Wis., to interview once more with a health-care software company called Epic Systems.  Although I had not been offered the position I interviewed for two months prior, I had been invited back to interview for several other positions.

Unlike the chaos I felt interviewing previously in the midst of finals week, this time I felt eerily calm and comfortable moving through my itinerary. For someone who is naturally a little jittery in interviews, the ease and enjoyment of every conversation left me with a sense of belonging. After leaving with

More Reasons Males Trail Females in College Attainment

August 25th, 2011

One of the reasons males trail females in college entrance and graduation is discipline problems in k-12. In these grades public school boys are twice as likely as girls to receive an out-of- school suspension, and three times as likely to be expelled. Males continue to not enroll in fast growing traditional female occupations like health care when they enter college. Males college graduation compared to females has trended down since 1977. Asian Male students earn 44.7% of the degrees, white men43.5% and black men 33%  compared to women.

Good Sports Always Recycle School Challenge

August 25th, 2011

With nearly 55 tons recycled at the University of Tennessee’s (UT) home games last year, and a goal of 64 tons this year, the Good Sports Always Recycle™ program is a stadium recycling program that the university and its sponsors can be proud of. But, another aspect of the program, Good Sports Always Recycle™ (GSAR) school challenge, is perhaps what makes the UT tradition so unique and such an important program for Tennessee’s K-12 schools.

Going on its 18th year, the GSAR program is once again kicking-off its school challenge, where schools statewide are encouraged to enter their environmental programs into a competition for a chance to be recognized as one of Tennessee’s top ten. The winning schools each receive $500 to help with environmental efforts in their school, as well as a one-of-a-kind tailgate celebration in Circle Park, the chance to stand on the field during the game at the University of Tennessee vs. South Carolina game on Saturday, October 29, 2011, and a commemorative plaque recognizing their efforts.

“At Eastman, we believe sustainability is an attitude and we want to create a future environment our children and grandchildren can enjoy. With progra
