Renegades move on

February 26th, 2011

Running all over the place on Friday but heres a quick update.

The Grand River Renegades advanced to the WCSSAA boys hockey final with a 6-3 win over the St. David Celtics.

The Rens jumped out to a 6-0 lead and that was all she wrote.

Theyll face the St. Marys Eagles in the best-of-three championship final starting Tuesday.

The Forest Heights Trojans won the CWOSSA junior girls volleyball final in a five-set thriller over the Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders. The Trojans won 25-21, 16-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-12 against the same squad they beat on Tuesday night in the WCSSAA final.

A great effort by both teams, especially Forest Heights Darian Moore and SJAMs Yvonne Pan.

Forest Heights and Grand River are both heading to the OFSAA quad-A senior girls volleyball tournament by reaching the CWOSSA final on Friday night.

The teams are still 22 minutes away from playing as I write this, but the outcome wont change a thing.

The Renegades booked their OFSAA ticket with semifinal win over the Resurrection Phoenix.

At the quad-A basketball event, junior semifinals are set.

Webcast Monday: Sales Engineering Secrets of Best In Class IT Providers

February 26th, 2011

Whether you are an IT Solution Provider or Managed Services Provider, the importance of the sales engineer’s role in building, growing and supporting an IT organization’s sales and marketing efforts cannot be overstated. The sales engineer is the buffer between sales and deployment, and is one of the keys to project profitability.

Let’s face it – we all know that a good sales person is going to do everything in their power in order to close an opportunity, and while this is great news (as we all want more sales), sometimes a sales person’s eagerness can create a client expectation that is difficult to meet. I’m certain that you know exactly what I’m talking about. A sales engin

Ohio Senate panel OKs increase to 5 snow days for schools

February 25th, 2011

COLUMBUS: Ohio lawmakers are moving quickly to provide relief to school districts that have run out of “snow days.”

A state Senate panel on Tuesday gave its unanimous approval to a bill that would allow schools to miss five days each year for bad weather or other emergencies. That’s an increase from the current three calamity days.

Districts used to have five but lost two under former Gov. Ted Strickland. The Columbus Dispatch reports Superintendent Roger Goudy of the Madison Local School District in Lake County told senators Tuesday that the calamity day cutback has been a hardship.

The measure to provide two more snow days faces a vote in the full Senate. If approved, it will move on to the House.

Gov. John Kasich supports more calamity days.

Can We Blame Professors for College Slackers?

February 19th, 2011

Last month, I wrote a couple of posts about this reality:  many students are graduating from college without absorbing much of an education.

From a parents perspective thats a lot of wasted money. And, of course, there are serious ramifications for students who have spent their college years living in a Bud Lite commercial. Here are the two posts:

Today I want to share with you a thoughtful column in The Chronicle of Higher Education today that attempts to explain, from a professors perspective, why so many college students seem impervious to learning. While professors should certainly be taking some of the blame for student underachievement, William Pannapacker, an associate English professor at Hope College in Michigan, explains the harsh realities of educating undergrads in the 21st century.  You can read his column here:

I am sharing just three of Pannapackers observations:

1. Many students are poorly prepared academically when they arrive in college. W
