Better late than never

I’ll admit it. I’m taking the easy way out in this week’s top-10 list as three athletes — maybe four — are in the above picture and were honoured at the Athletics Ontario awards banquet in Toronto over the weekend. I say maybe four because I haven’t been able to pin down where Kailee Sawyer (far left) goes to school. The Laurel Creek track member was the bantam-age winner in the girls distance division. Devon Rittinger (second from left) of Forest Heights and Supreme Athletics was honoured as the top performer in the youth sprint-hurdles class. Jaimie Phelan (third from left) of St. Mary’s and Laurel Creek was the midget-age winner in the girls distance category. Angela Mercurio (right) of St. Mary’s and Supreme Athletics was the midget winner in the girls jumps category.

Here’s the rest of what should be Monday’s top-10 list.

Want a teaching license? Does the camera love you?

October 30th, 2010

The assessments also place responsibility for grading the would-be teachers with teams of outside evaluators who have no stake in the result. Currently, the teachers-in-training are evaluated by their colleges, which want their students to get their teaching licenses.

“It’s a big shift that the whole country is going through,” said Misty Sato, a University of Minnesota education professor who is helping adapt the assessments for Minnesota. “It’s going from ‘What has your candidate experienced?’ to what your candidate can do.”

Minnesota is scheduled to be the first state to adopt the new system when it implements it in 2012. Four other states —Massachusetts, Ohio, Tennessee and Washington — plan to implement it within five years. Fourteen more states are running pilots.

The teacher assessment program is a joint project by a consortium made up of Stanford University, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

Traits of a Successful Distance Learner or Is Online College Right For You?

October 26th, 2010

If you’ve been wondering if online learning is right for you: you aren’t alone! It’s a convenient choice for busy adults wanting to earn an online Bachelor degree and a viable option for students with health concerns who can’t attend a traditional college. However, distance  learning doesn’t mean “easy” – here are a few things to keep in mind as you weigh whether or not online college will work for you.

Independent – Chalk it up as one more reason why high school is different from college, in that college professors don’t really do a lot of hand-holding when it comes to getting your work done and turned in. Some won’t ever mention due dates (they will be on the semester’s syllabus) – which closely resembles the way online college works.

Internet Connection – This might sound like a no-brainer, but if you don’t have either a stable internet connection or any internet connection at all: forget it! There are no excuses in colleg

Tuesday Churn: Jones inks pact

October 25th, 2010

What’s churning:

State education Commission Dwight Jones has signed his contract with the Clark County (Nev.) Schools, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal. According to the newspaper, Jones’ annual compensation package totals $358,000, including $270,000 salary. He also will receive $15,000 for moving expenses and up to $8,000 plus expenses to travel to Las Vegas before he officially begins work as superintendent on Dec. 15. Jones told Education News Colorado last week that he expected his last day on the job in Colorado would be Dec. 13.

What’s on tap:

It could be another hot meeting in Far Northeast Denver tonight. Alternate plans to the one assembled over the past several months by Denver Public Schools and a committee overseen by the A-Plus Denver citizens group will be presented, and the committee is expected to finalize recommendations, which will then go to the school board for a Nov. 18 vote. Sticking Close to Home for College

October 25th, 2010

I talked to a mom last week who wanted me to help her son find wonderful colleges that would would award him a scholarship, but her top priority is keeping him as close to home as possible.

The San Diego mom wants him to attend a California college. She also seemed to rule out Northern California as too far away.

Why does he have to attend college nearby?

“I’d miss my baby,” she explained. And she added, “He would miss my food.”

I tried to explain to her that he’d enjoy many more educational opportunities — and chances for scholarships and/or financial aid – if he could cast a wider net, but she shut me down. The mom might seem extreme, but most teenagers don’t  seriously consider attending a college outside their state.

I checked figures today from the National Center for Education Statistics and here is what I found:

Nearly 83%  of students attend four-year colleges and universities in their own states. The number is even
